So far, a theme of The Great Gatsby seems to be social status. Nick comes from the same background as the Buchanans; however, the Buchanans choose to live in the "upper class" side of the area (East Egg), while Nick doesn't seem to mind the fact that his house is of less value than others around him. Nick's beliefs are a stark contrast to those of his cousin's and her husband. Despite both Nick and Tom having graduated from Yale, Nick appears to be more down-to-earth, while Tom cares more about his class; he lives in East Egg. In the beginning, Nick describes himself as "tolerant", and "reserves judgement". Nick does not seem to want to be like the residents of East Egg, despite having many connections there. He does not want to be a part of that lifestyle; he is a highly moral person, which he has stated about himself.
